MODELING AND KIDS ON THE CATWALK

You've probably heard the term "Catwalk" in the modeling industry or on America's Next Top Model, but how many of you know what it means.  Many people think it has to do with the style of the models walk, but here's what Wikepedia says "In fashion, a catwalk is a narrow, usually flat platform that runs into an auditorium, used by models to demonstrate clothing and accessories during a fashion show.  In fashion jargon, "what's on the catwalk" or similar phrasing can refer to whatever is new and popular in fashion.  Read the full article here Wikipedia Catwalk.

It's not often that you see kids modeling on the Catwalk, but here's a wonderful video I came across with beautiful child models strutting their stuff.  Love this European style these kids are modeling from the children's clothing brand Mayoral.

By the way, Answer Bag say's this about the Catwalk: "It's a term that was already used for a narrow walkway that connects buildings, kind of like a footbridge, allowing workmen to get to one tall building to the next, kind of walking or roaming the neighborhood like a tom cat does. Catwalks are also what they call those narrow walkways up high in theaters or concert halls, just like cats like to walk up high on tops of walls or roofs."

Well, that explains it!

If you're teenage daughter or son is looking to start a modeling career one of the things they should do is look at fashion magazines such as Vogue.

Vogue magazine with iconic model Twiggy.
Spend time looking at the modeling poses and how the model uses her eyes to communicate.  Although these are adult models, your teenage aspiring model will learn by observation, key ways to work the camera.  I find many young or inexperienced child models or teen models don't know what to do with their body or limbs during their first photoshoot.  By looking at successful models your kids can learn basic posing and inspiration for their first photoshoot.

Not all kids or teens that start modeling have a natural ability.  I've seen many young girls and guys learn and grow as they get more and more comfortable with the camera.   Half the battle is knowing what to do.    You don't need to go to an expensive modeling school to learn this.  In fact many of the modeling schools are overpriced scams that want you to pay thousands of dollars for classes and hundreds to thousands for headshots and modeling portfolios.  Modeling school is not a necessary step to get a modeling agent for your child.   It doesn't mean you can't learn something at these schools, it's just that you do not have to spend that kind of money to get started as a child or teen model.  Beware of those that ask you to pay thousands of dollars to get your child started as a model or signed up with an agency.  Really all that is needed is to get the photos done and then submit to the agencies.  A good photographer will help guide the talent through the photoshoot, usually giving posing tips if the model is inexperienced.   As with anything the more experience, the better you get.  The same holds true with modeling.

KIDS ACTING HEADSHOTS.  MAKE UP OR NO MAKE UP?

The general rule for acting headshots whether a kid, teen or adult is that it must look like you.  Heavy make up on kids may be the norm for pageants but casting agents don't want to see this with a child's acting headshot.  A little bit of chapstick and moisturizer if needed is perfect for very young children.

With older children ages 9-12 I often recommend Burt's Bee's Natural Lip Shimmers or Cherry Chapstick and a light dusting of natural mineral powder. (I also love the one from  MAC cosmetics). If the eyes need brightning or the lashes are on the light side a little bit of clear mascara does the trick.  Other then that make up isn't recommended for kids headshots under age 13.

Once a child hits thirteen make up is recommended for acting headshots, however it should be kept fresh and natural.  With teen headshots I like to start out with a girl next door look using light foundation, a little bit of blush and mascara.  After shooting this look, we can add some eyeliner to pop the eyes a bit more.  Then towards the end of the shoot we can go a little heavier with the eyeliner, pulling out a little edge.   Depending on the actress, we might go very edgy or some teen actors may even do a goth look, if that is a role they would like to portray.  These are additional looks that their talent agent might want for their commercial headshot portfolio.
With a teenage boys acting headshot you typically don't need make up unless a very uneven skin tone or to cover up blemishes.  Always keep kids and teen headshots very natural.

Regarding teen boys headshots, a little bit of foundation or cover up may be needed if there are blemishes or pimples.  Also, some foundation or concealer can be helpful for under the eyes or to even the skin tones.  Typically I like to evaluate this on an individual basis.  Many young actors have great skin and there is no need for make up during their headshot session.
