child actor booking.

Congratulations to Isabella on her first audition AND first booking. Her mom wrote "...And she booked the commercial..thanks for the tips". About 10 days ago we did her acting headshots

with her and her beautiful sister. Then, since she had her first ever audition that same day, I gave her some tips for the audition and what to do. We talked about the role and I  recommended she wear the "smart kid" look that you see here above.  We had photographed that look as one of her headshot "looks".    She left the photoshoot after we did her

headshots and then she went and nailed the audition. Oh and did I mention she also had school that morning before her headshot session? These young actors truly rock life.

a child's headshot photo session.

Lately the industry has been very busy.  Not only do we have pilot season (which is just winding down), we also have so many more networks like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube Red etc.  This is fabulous news for young actors as there are a lot more audition opportunities.

Since I've been so busy, I haven't had a chance to post much.  But, I've had so many wonderful kids headshot session's lately and, fortunately the weather has been cooperating.   I would love to post all of the kids headshots, or modeling photos that I've recently shot, but there are only so many hours in the day.   I do post on my facebook headshot page and my instagram headshot page as well, so you can view additional children and teen headshots there.  In the meantime here are a couple of the agent choices from Gracie's recent child's headshot photo session:
A great kids commercial headshot with fabulous energy and likeability.  A kids commercial headshot should always have good energy and be very likeable.  The colors in her outfit are also energetic which add to her vibrant and beautiful smile.
Kids headshots usually include commercial shots, theatrical shots for tv & film and personality or character shots which may show you as different types.  The above headshot is a commercial headshot which typically shows fabulous energy and likeability.  Smiles are required for this type of photo.

The headshot below is also a commercial headshot.  Usually an agent will choose 3-6 images for their commercial portfolio or LA Casting profile.  This headshot is a personality or a character kids headshot.

Character child's headshot.
The character child's headshot should show just that...personality and character.  Some agents will use these for Disney or Nickelodeon auditions and such, but typically they are good for commercial auditions.  I just love her smile and sparkling eyes in this character kids headshot.

When you are ready to book your child's headshot session, we will go over what type of wardrobe and looks your child should have for their headshots.  In the meantime "happy auditioning".

Broadway bound.

A huge congratulations to my longtime client Imani Pullum who booked Disney's "The Lion King" and got the amazing opportunity to tour the US for the Broadway show.  Such an amazing accomplishment for such a young actor.  She is playing young Nala.

I am so proud and excited for her and believe this is just the beginning of her amazing career.  Here is a kids headshot we did from a recent headshot session.

A recent kids headshot photo session showing different types.

Talent agents and talent managers often send me clients for new headshots and will ask for certain looks or types.  They want the kids headshots to show a range of looks or types that the talent could realistically play.  What they don't want is over the top wardrobe, or costumes in the headshot photos.  But what they do want are expressions, hair styles and clothing that will suggest that "type".

So when a client books a kids headshot session or a teen headshot session, I like to give them tips on what to bring and will send them ideas, photos and recommendations.

With this young aspiring actress I felt she could play several different types, so I worked with her and her mom to pull out these different looks and types during her headshot session.  Mom brought a great wardrobe and followed my recommendations that I sent her before the shoot.

The headshots turned out fabulous and we ended up showing nice range of character or type.  We also pulled out the very important element of a headshot which is confidence, and emotive and expressive eyes.  Here are a few shots from the headshot session.

The first look is just a simple kids headshot showing her normal look and normal hair.  The second images is a simple kids headshot, but also showing confidence and very emotive and expressive eyes.
Below a simple kids headshot which shows confidence, and very emotive and expressive  eyes.
From a recent kids headshot photo session. This one is a simple kids headshot, but also showing confidence and very emotive and expressive eyes.
In the next kids headshot she is showing a fun kid expression...pretty over the top, but it perfectly communicates how kids or young teens can be so expressive and excited.  The headshot also reflects the character or type.  In this kids headshot she is showing a "quirky or nerdy" eager type character.
A kids recent headshot photo session showing different types. In this kids headshot she is showing a "quirky or nerdy" and "eager type" character.
The above kids headshot is very Disney or great for the actors commercial profile.  This would not be the main headshot, but would be an additional look.   In the headshot below we also have an additional look which shows a completely different type.  This headshots shows the more angsty, young teen or a more rebellious spirit.

So when you are ready to book your kids next headshot session, think about the different types they can play and then call me or email me to go over what wardrobe could communicate this.

Kids Headshots and 3 Ways to Increase Auditions

Kids Headshots and 3 Ways To Increase Auditions

If you're not getting auditions, it's hard to book the job.  What can you do?  Well, you could start complaining to your agent, but this will probably kill any further opportunities.   The last thing an agent or manager wants to hear is a parent or an actor complaining.  This often translates to, "You're not doing your job".   Appreciating your talent reps should be at the top of your list, because these hardworking folks are pushing daily and submitting your kids headshots like crazy to get those auditions, and they don't make a penny until you book.  Having an actor just sit on the shelf doesn't do the agent any good--believe me, they want to get you out there and auditioning as much as possible.  So what can you do to increase auditions? Having a great headshot is vital, but is not the only thing to do.  Scroll down to see some great tips including creative ways to use your kids headshots.

A great kids headshot is always helpful to get an audition but there's also other things you should do.
So you got your kids headshots and now what?  In a job, relationship or any area of life, one has to keep creating, improving and promoting.  Otherwise it might not be known or that thing will wither away or be forgotton.   For example a friendship may wither away if you don't create it, but inviting a friend to dinner keeps the relationship flourishing.   Secondly if you improve your home, it becomes worth more, people notice it and may compliment you on it, and you feel better about it.  And thirdly, it may be necessary to promote yourself if you want a new job, to get in college, or even to get a new boyfriend, otherwise they may not know you exist.  It's the same with acting-you should  create, improve and promote.  Here are some examples of doing this using your creativity and your awesome kids headshots:
CREATE THINGS THAT SHOW YOU OFF
You could sign up for an actors showcase and invite your agent, manager or casting directors to come see you perform a scene. You could create a new character on a youtube channel--like Miranda Sings or Fred.  Put your acting headshot as your profile or at the beginning of each new episode. Or how about creating a dance reel showing your best moves and then forward it to your reps.  Make sure you include at the end of the clip your kids acting headshot.
To increase auditions, make a reel or a clip of your child's skills and then make sure you include at the end your kids headshots.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
Get better at something and take a new class like improv, scene study, dance, singing, voice, dialect, a new sport, etc.  There are a zillion classes available in LA and skills are always needed with actors.  A few years ago my daughter got an audition for a national commercial with her beginning piano skills, she then booked it, but it was the skills that helped her in the door because the actor had to be able to play basic piano. (She also had a great kids headshot!  Watch it here: Straight Talk commercial (It's a funny spot and they put fake braces on her to create more character.)   Also, if you find ways to improve yourself like acting classes, when the auditions come in you have a better chance of getting the callback.  With more callbacks your auditions will go up because your reps have more confidence in you and the cd remembers you, because you are a skilled actor.  You may not have been right for the part, but they will call you in again for other roles.  You can learn a new sport, practice accents or dialects or improve upon one you already have.  All of these things add up to a more marketable actor.  Then, pair these skills with a great headshot and the promotion tips below which outline how to promote your kids headshots.
Actors skills and a great kids headshots will help increase auditions.
Actors skills, promotion and a great kids headshot will help increase auditions.
PROMOTE YOUR KIDS HEADSHOTS
We all know who Target, McDonalds and Honda are, but have you seen how much they promote?  If you look at most successful companies they promote.  How can you do this as an actor?  Sign up for some cd workshops.  Oh and make sure you give the casting director your kid's headshot.  Do an actors showcase and pass out your acting headshots to the casting directors or people who attend after the show.  Or, send a clip of your amazing dance moves to your agent. Send a 1 minute video clip of your child's incredible double-dutch skills (that she just learned). Your rep may even want the skill posted on LA Casting.  And by all means get your kids or teens new headshots so the agent has something fresh to promote with and casting gets to see the current you.  Use these headshots to promote.  For example you can order business cards with one of your kids headshots on it to pass out, or send a postcard with three new headshot looks to casting.  Put a note that you got new headshots and include any recent bookings. You can order postcards and business cards online at my favorite lab http://www.Argentum.com  and as a bonus my clients get a 20%  discount.  As a Robin Lorraine Photography client you can contact me if you need the code.  They are my lab of choice for printing your kid's headshots.

So keep your children's headshots fresh, use them for promoting and also continue to improve and create.   To your next booking!
