Kids headshots are not just a picture

Kids headshots are not just a picture.  An acting headshot is your child's calling card and a vital marketing tool. Actors can’t survive without a headshot and the headshot must be a strong photo of the actor to get noticed.  A kids acting headshot is one of the most important tools which is used throughout a child's acting career.  Even young and established celebrities need a great headshot.

Kids Headshots

With today’s online casting your kids headshot needs to stand out in a sea of thumbnails. A casting director views your child's itty, bitty headshot next to several other child actors, and some of these may even resemble your young thespian. Casting may look at several hundred to several thousands kids headshots submitted for the same role in a matter of moments.  A tight, close-up headshot  that pops off the page is imperative if you want your kid to get noticed by casting directors.

Question:  What makes a great kid headshot?
Answer: It must look like the actor--AND, there must be some sort of great communication coming thru.   This is all done with lighting, composition & the ability of the photographer to pull this communication out with each kid during the headshot session.  To view some recent kids headshot sessions click here: Kids Headshots.  You can also see more headshots for kids on my website under the "actor" tab here: Headshots for kids and teens.

Kids headshot "commercial"

A kids headshot must show great energy for commercials.  Casting directors like to know that your child actor is energetic, fun, likeable and not shy.  The above kids headshot is an example of a great commercial headshot.

There are several different types of kids headshots that will be needed for the portfolio and one of those is called a "theatrical" headshot.  A theatrical headshot is used for TV & film casting.  With a theatrical headshot you want to see confidence and or soulful eyes.  A strong expression without a smile is key.  With the theatrical kids headshot you should see communication thru the eyes.   Look at the eyes and how powerful the expression is below.  The colors work well in this headshot but what you see is emotion in the eyes.  You also see confidence even though she is such a young child.  This is an example of a strong "theatrical" kids headshot.

Kids headshots of a young actress acting headshot, six years old.

As a kid's headshot photographer I am so grateful to do what I do.  I meet adorable, talented child actors every week who are pursuing their love of the performing arts.  Some want to act, some want to sing and some want to dance.  Some want it all and excel in all things performing arts.   They always amaze me with their talent, kindness, intelligence and beauty inside and out.  My work is not serious and we are often laughing and playing throughout the entire shoot.   Along with working with these amazing kids,  I get to meet and work with the parents.  And many times I even photograph the parents headshots or the family shots because they are also in the industry.

This beautiful child actress was no exception.  She did a great job during her acting headshot photography session.  We did four wardrobe changes and different headshot looks to give her a variety of "types" in her acting and casting portfolio.

Here are a few of her agent picks from the headshot photo session.  I love her "Little Miss Sassy Pants"expression in this acting headshot below.

Kids headshots and what to wear for the photo shoot?

KIDS HEADSHOTS AND WHAT TO WEAR FOR THE PHOTO SHOOT?

One of the questions that I am often asked as a child model photographer is "What kind of clothing should I bring to a child model photo shoot?"  That's a great question and I thought I could start by sharing some of the dont's.

DON'T'S FOR A CHILD MODEL PHOTO SHOOT:
1.  Don't bring bold clothing with distracting patterns.
2.  Don't bring very baggy and oversized clothing.
3.  Don't bring clothes with company logos.

When choosing clothes for a child model photo shoot, ensure the clothing shows the body type and is not a wild or distracting bold print.  Also, the child model photo should clearly show the body type.
The reason for a modeling photo shoot is to create a portfolio of images. The portfolio is then sent to casting directors when they post a job seeking child models.  The images in the portfolio need to show the child models face and body type.  They should also clearly show their skin tone, hair color, eye color and any possible interesting traits such as a tooth gap, freckles etc.
You can clearly see his skin tone, eye color and hair color in this child model photo.
When you are buying a pair of shoes online you want to know what you are getting.  You may look at 3-5 photos to determine the heal height, the small details and if they are the style or "look" you want.  In a modeling portfolio, busy patterns and bold clothing are distracting and then the photo is about the clothing and not the model.  The casting director wants to have a good idea of what he is getting. Does your child model fit the specs that they need for this particular photo shoot?

If those same shoes were in a oversize bag, you wouldn't be able to see them well.  With a models portfolio, baggy clothing may hide the child's body type and the casting director may not know if they are a good choice for the shoot.

Also, your photographer doesn't want you to bring clothes with logos to the photo shoot.  Logos, like Nike, GAP, JCREW may be in direct conflict with the product that they are seeking models for.  Adida's will not want to see prospective models wearing a NIKE t-shirt or that famous swish on the side of the shoes.  On a photo shoot set, they may put white tape over the swish to hide this.  For the most part you don't have to worry about the shoes as this is a minor detail, but a shirt with a big logo can definitely be a problem for a headshot.  A small logo could be photo shopped but ideally you have clothes without logos.  Bear this in mind when putting the clothing together for your child's model photo shoot and choose clothes that do not have logos.
Choose clothes and shoes that do not have logos for a child model photoshoot.

In summary, remember that the product an agent is selling is the model, not the clothing they are wearing.  Your child modeling photos are key to getting cast or getting an audition, so be aware of these basic rules when you put the clothes together to bring to a child modeling photoshoot.

In my next post I will go over the "Do's" for a child modeling photoshoot and provide more examples.  In the meantime here is another  example from a child modeling photoshoot and I hope you can use these child model photographer tips.

A great close up photo from a modeling photoshoot will have no logos, no bold patterns or distracting prints and clearly shows the skin tone, hair and eye color.

Baby Modeling Talent Agencies

Baby modeling talent agencies in Los Angeles are booming like never before.  With all the adorable baby clothing lines, diapers, and baby products comes a need for baby models.  Baby models are needed for magazine ads, internet advertising, TV commercials, feature films and TV shows. More and more baby talent agencies have opened up over the years and more baby models are needed.

What do baby talent agencies want in a baby model or baby actor?  Of course they do want to see cute babies, but along with this, a good-natured, happy baby is crucial.  A shy baby who clings to mom will not do well as a baby model.  But a baby who is cheerful, smiles a lot and seems to enjoy being in the company of others will do great.  The baby may have to be held by an actress who is playing the part of the child's mom, so if the baby is super shy or afraid of being held by another person, he or she is not really fit for this industry.  It's not surprising that this baby model and actor got a talent agent right after getting his first baby headshots.

Baby model headshot showing big smile, blue eyes and blue shirt.
Baby model talent agents are often looking for new faces.  Unlike adult models, baby models are constantly needed because children grow up.  Talent agents who represent babies will need new babies, new kids to fill those spots on their roster.

Baby model headshot.  This photo is an additional look wearing a hat for his baby model portfolio.

Baby model headshot showing his full body, big smile and those gorgeous blue eyes.
I don't recommend getting baby headshots until the child is at least sitting up.  The child will change so fast that in a month or two the headshots don't even look like the child.  And honestly I find that different agents have different preferences, but most agents will accept a snapshot of the baby when they are newborn to 6 months.
Baby model showing that he can stand up but not yet walking.  This baby headshot shows his body type and of course those gorgeous blue eyes again.
If you are looking for baby model headshots or if you have questions about the baby modeling industry and getting your baby started contact Robin Lorraine Photography.  I can help you get your baby a talent agent and get started in the industry.

Teen Acting Headshot Session in Los Angeles

When scheduling a headshot session I like to ensure my clients come very prepared.  I normally send the headshot client wardrobe recommendations, inspiration and recommended colors and character types I feel they can play.  As a previous youth talent manager  for many years, I have a lot of experience knowing what type of acting headshots a casting director  responds to.

Here's an example of a teen actors headshot  session with a very handsome young teenage actor.   We worked out several different types and characters he could play and then shot accordingly with the appropriate expression and wardrobe.  Mom did a great job bringing a wonderful selection of wardrobe choices and the young actor did a great job working with me to get the shots.  Great team work translates into great headshots.

When it comes to shopping for your kids acting headshots session you may want to go to a few different stores and purchase a some items that may not be part of your kids normal wardrobe. I love H&M kids,  and Zara Kids for fun, colorful, textured clothing.  The sweater below is a great example. However, you may have plenty of wardrobe that is suitable already without spending additional money.  I do like parents to bring several different shirts, jackets, sweaters, etc., to give me choices.  And I will always try to save you money and use what you have if possible. Leave the tags on anything you purchase, as I may not use it.  Keep reading below to get more tips on teen acting headshots.

This wouldn't be used for a main headshot, but rather as an additional look for an actors portfolio.

Always keep in mind the colors and what it projects and the collars and necklines and what they project.  Jock or popular high school kid, edgy, quirky, smart kid, boy next door, trouble maker...they are all characters he can play.  With these headshots and the range they show, the talent agent can submit different images for different roles.

Top child headshot photographers Los Angeles

What is a top acting headshot photographer?  And how do you choose a headshot photographer for your child's acting headshots?
Young boy acting headshot

What is a top acting headshot photographer?  And how do you choose a headshot photographer for your child's acting headshots.

Most of my business as a headshot photographer are direct referrals from talent agents and or talent managers.  Most agents have a short list of recommended headshot photographers.  These are the photographers that consistently produce great headshots and that the talent agent can count on.  The agent does not want their clients to waste money on so-so headshots or mediocre headshots.  It is not good for the actor or actress and it is not good for the agent or talent manager.

This business is very team oriented. And in fact behind any successful person there will be a team of people who are contributing to that success.  If I am shooting headshots for an actress or actor that was referred to me by a talent agent, then I want to ensure that not only the actor (or parent of the actor) is happy, but also that the agent and manager are happy.  My thoughts are that if the agent is very happy with the headshots, then they will be confidently and enthusiastically submitting them to castings.   If the shots are not so great, the agent who has to look at those photos everyday, will not be thrilled to submit them.  They will not be submitting them with confidence.  They may have a little hesitancy or just be a tiny bit annoyed when they see those so-so headshots.  You want the team to all be on the same page.  The actor, the manager, the agent, the photographer, the acting coach, the parent(s), etc.,  They should all be working together to get the end goal of a booking.  Each person will contribute to the actors success, even though booking the job will be the actors job. But without a team, it is pretty difficult for an actor to succeed.  The photographer should be working to help the actor, agent, and manager to succeed. If the shots have strong communication along with several other factors, the agents & managers will have more success in getting those auditions.  I believe that a top headshot photographer cares greatly that the headshots work.  With my clients I truly love to see them succeed as an artist, as an actor.

Choosing a headshot photographer is not brain surgery, but you do want to look at the photographer's portfolio.  Do the eyes communicate?  Does the headshot speak?  Do you feel drawn to the faces in the actors portfolio?  Does every actor's headshot look the same or is there some variety in the headshot photographers work?  Does the photographer offer different looks of the same actor? Can you see enough of their work to know that they shoot a lot of headshots?

If the headshots are for your child or for a teen actor, then you should find out if the headshot photographer works with kids or teen actors.  And what age kids do they photograph?  Are they young kids, babies, teens actors?  Have you seen the reviews of the photographer?  Child acting headshots-reviews.  I once had a mother bring her young son to me.  He was on the sensitive side and they had gone to a photographer who was impatient, serious and demanding of the child, expecting him to behave like an adult.  The child introverted and consequently the headshots were not good.  They ended up doing another headshot session with me because I have a great deal of experience with kids.  I got great shots with this boy, because I like kids and I know how to work with them.  The mom was thrilled and the agent loved the shots.  If you have to redo your headshots because they don't work or your agent is not happy, then you are wasting a lot of money.

Most of the casting these days is done online.  So that means the first thing a casting director will see is the actors headshot thumbnail.  Does the image pop or get your attention?  Imagine that a casting director may see hundreds to thousands of acting headshot thumbnails for one casting. That headshot thumbnail will need to jump off the page.  It should stand out, but still look professional and appealing.  This is Hollywood, not a yearbook.   If the work is somewhat generic or looks like a school photo you may want to look further for a different headshot photographer.

Are the photographers  headshots about the clothes, about the background?  This may make for an interesting portrait but a headshot is about the actor, not the background.   A busy background with multiple contrasting colors and lines will distract.  Most agents do not want brick walls, trees and foliage that is distracting or taking attention from the actors face.   A top headshot photographer will balance the background using it to draw your attention to the face, or balance the colors of a shirt, or to pop the eyes or to do nothing...nothing to distract from those eyes.  A top headshot photographer doesn't shoot against busy backgrounds.  Please note that a modeling portfolio may have backgrounds like trees, and such as those shots are often more editorial like.  I will go over that in another post.

Acting headshot with young child actress.

Then there are the questions like what are the rates, what is included?  Where is the studio?  Do they offer weekend shoots---for kids who are in school.  Does the headshot photographer offer hair and make up?

There are many headshot photographers in all different price ranges, but just because they offer cheap $150 rates are not a reason to book a shoot.  This is a business, you should approach it as a professional.
