As I've mentioned before a headshot is not just a picture. Headshots in Hollywood are taken very seriously. Why? Because a child actors headshot can open doors to those coveted roles and castings.

Like it or not, this is a business and this is something you should understand when your child begins acting. In any business you have to promote, advertise and or get the word out there that you have the best product or are a candidate for the job.

An actors headshot is used in advertising their unique look--it's a promotional tool. The child's headshot shows casting what they look like and whether they are fit for the role, appearance wise.
For commercial castings often a casting director needs a very specific look. They may want a teenager who looks "bookish or somewhat nerdy". In this case they will pull actors who have that appearance or can pull off that look. Recently I was interviewed for an article on kids headshots for Backstage Magazine and I gave some tips on headshots and specific looks.
