Does my child have a good look for acting?

I often get asked about whether or not a child would be good for acting, because sometimes the parents are concerned about the child's teeth, braces, weight, ears or one of their features.  To be perfectly honest I understand this, as Hollywood has a reputation of working with beautiful people.

However, if you look at TV shows, feature films and commercials, you will see all types.  Small actors, big actors, short actors, tall actors, beautiful actors, quirky actors.   Actors and actresses with big ears, big nose, freckles, glasses, etc. Some of our most celebrated actors and actresses are not the "beautiful" ones.

Fortunately, in today's market real, unique, and quirky is in.  Take a look at the young kids from the very popular show "Stranger Things".  They are so likeable and real.  Are they known for their beauty?  No, they are popular because they are excellent actors and they are very likable and real.  Quirky is in and even though the child may be more on the pretty side, some talent agents are even asking the photographer to ensure to capture the quirky kids headshot.
Agents are asking for the "geek chic" look or "quirky" kids headshots.  Kids headshot taken by Robin Lorraine Photography.
Yes, there are always going to be beautiful people in Hollywood, but that's because beauty sells.  Most of us will turn our heads to look at a beautiful or striking woman or a very handsome man because, we are naturally attracted to beauty.

But, we also like to see things that are real and relatable.  Things that communicate to us, because we are or have experienced this.  Network family shows like "The Middle", "Modern Family", "Blackish", "Speechless"  all have elements and actors that are more relatable to most of us.   And Netflix has a slew of shows that are filled with very real looking people who are of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and types.  More like the real world.  It wasn't always like this, but fortunately Hollywood is being pressured more and more to stop discriminating against body types, physical appearance, ethnicity, disabilities etc.  And the public is happy about this, rightfully so.

So, does my child have a good look for acting?  I would answer this by saying "Does your child want to act?"  And that should be the question.
