AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD BEGIN ACTING AND MODELING?

I've spoken to many parents who want to get their child started in modeling or acting and they often have the question "Is my child the right age to start?"  There is no right or wrong age.  The important thing is whether the family is able to support it and the child or teen is interested.  

If you have a baby or toddler, really only you can determine if your child is ready.  Are they very comfortable with adults, good natured and generally cheerful?  These are good indications that they are fit for starting a career at a very young age.  The key here is that there will be a lot of driving all over Los Angeles if they have auditions, so you want to make sure your child will be comfortable with this.  Typically twins, triplets and kids who are small for their age are in much bigger demand.

If your kids are age 5 and up, you can consult with them and see if they are interested. They are at an age where they can easily communicate what they like and dislike and are comfortable with.  I find that most of the kids in this business have asked their parents to do this or are even pushing the parents to get them going. It doesn't take coaxing and persuading.  They want to act, model, dance, sing etc.  They are not shy or introverted.

Once your kids have hit the tween or teen years they will make it known if they are interested and want to pursue acting or modeling. You would be hard pressed to try to drag a tween boy to auditions if he wasn't interested.  If they like to perform or are asking to try this it is the right time to start the process of headshots, agent hunting, classes etc.

As far as the industry goes, they are always on the look out for young people.  Babies, kids and teens grow and change and agents need new faces all the time.   Kids have a lot of opportunity and if they are natural performers or are reaching to do this, then it might be a good time to look into getting an agent.
