When putting together the wardrobe for your child or teen actors headshot session I always like to see some "layers" and clothing options for this. Good layering choices that work really well for a kids headshot include denim jackets, hoodies, plaid shirts and long sleeve shirts to go under short sleeve shirts.
Layers can create a more youthful look in a headshot. For example a teenager who looks older then their age, may want to add a hoody to one of the shots to keep her young and more youthful for her acting headshots. Denim jackets and plaid shirts also give this vibe. Blouses on the other hand tend to look more sophisticated and older. It is especially important for teens to not look to old in their headshots, but that will be a different post. Key is to keep an actor more on the youthful side and layers can help project this in a teen acting headshot. Same rule applies for a child who looks a little bit older then their age.
Layers can also add dimension to the photograph which makes for a more interesting headshot and steers away from the 'school photo" look which tend to be very one dimensional.
Layers are also wonderful for child modeling and print modeling headshots or
ZED cards or model cards. It's a great way to project fashion and mix patterns or create a hip look. I recommend a choice of both solid color wardrobe headshots and then some patterned or layered choices for the card. Show some variety. Layers are also a great way to create fun looks for boys headshots and modeling cards since boys clothing is more limited then girls.
When you schedule your kids headshot session, ensure you bring some clothing that will be good for layers. In the meantime here are some examples of kids headshots and some teen headshot showing layering.
