What to wear for a child model photoshoot??

One of the questions that I am often asked as a child model photographer is "What kind of clothing should I bring to a child model photoshoot?"  That's a great question and I thought I could start by sharing some of the dont's.

DON'T'S FOR A CHILD MODEL PHOTOSHOOT:
1.  Don't bring bold clothing with distracting patterns.
2.  Don't bring very baggy and oversized clothing.
3.  Don't bring clothes with company logos.

When choosing clothes for a child model photoshoot, ensure the clothing shows the body type and is not a wild or distracting bold print.  Also, the child model photo should clearly show the body type.
The reason for a modeling photoshoot is to create a portfolio of images and or a photocard (aka ZED Card, Comp Card).  The portfolio is then sent to casting directors when they post a job seeking child models.  The images in the portfolio need to show the child models face and body type.  They should also clearly show their skin tone, hair color, eye color and any possible interesting traits such as a tooth gap, freckles etc.
You can clearly see his skin tone, eye color and hair color in this child model photo.
When you are buying a pair of shoes online you want to know what you are getting.  You may look at 3-5 photos to determine the heal height, the small details and if they are the style or "look" you want.  In a modeling portfolio, busy patterns and bold clothing are distracting and then the photo is about the clothing and not the model.  The casting director wants to have a good idea of what he is getting.

If those same shoes were in a oversize bag, you wouldn't be able to see them well.  With a models portfolio, baggy clothing may hide the child's body type and the casting director may not know if they are a good choice for the shoot.

Also, your photographer doesn't want you to bring clothes with logos to the photoshoot.  Logos, like Nike, GAP, JCREW may be in direct conflict with the product that they are seeking models for.  Adida's will not want to see prospective models wearing a NIKE t-shirt or that famous swish on the side of the shoes.  Bear this in mind when putting the clothing together for your child's model photoshoot and choose clothes that do not have logos.
Choose clothes and shoes that do not have logos for a child model photoshoot.
In summary, remember that the product an agent is selling is the model, not the clothing they are wearing.  Your child modeling photos are key to getting cast or getting an audition, so be aware of these basic rules when you put the clothes together to bring to a child modeling photoshoot.

In my next post I will go over the "Do's" for a child modeling photoshoot and provide more examples.  In the meantime here is another  example from a child modeling photoshoot and I hope you can use these child model photographer tips.
A great close up photo from a modeling photoshoot will have no logos, no bold patterns or distracting prints and clearly shows the skin tone, hair and eye color.

a recent "Tiny Tot" session.

Here's a few shots from a recent "Tiny Tot" headshot session.

The "Tiny Tot" headshots sessions include three wardrobe changes, full body shots and close up headshots.  It's a discounted, ($225), mini session because most young kids and toddlers are not interested in working a couple of hours for a full headshot session.  Also, I offer a discount at this age because the kids grow so fast and most likely will need to update their headshots in six months.   Typically if they book a job that will more then cover the headshot session fee.
Kids acting headshots by Robin Lorraine Photography

Remember your kids headshot should always look like them and represent their body type, current hair, weight and features.  Typically with very young children their teeth are growing in, their face may thin out or fill in,  and in general they will change a great deal in 6 months.

Child Modeling Headshot

I  do like to include some 3/4 or full body shots with young ones because they are often good candidates for child modeling.  Talent agents who represent child models like to have in the portfolio some images that show the body type.

Child Modeling Headshot.  Can also work for an energetic kids commercial headshot.

Most talent agents will choose 2-6 images for the  child actor's headshot portfolio.  And my experience is that with young children 2-3 images is what a talent agent will use for their online portfolio.  However,  if the child is signed with a talent agent who also represents child models, then they typically use more images and will definitely want some full body shots.   As you can see by the photos above a casting director would get a good feel for this child's look, body type and her energetic, cheerful personality.

Some photos from a recent session with my lovely  & gorgeous young client.  She wanted a ZED card or composite card so we did both full body and close ups.  What an adorable child!  Such beautiful skin tone and eyes!

This is a beautiful theatrical shot (tv & film roles).  The confidence and direct eye contact really speaks to casting directors.  She still shows likeability.

RECENT KIDS MODELING AND HEADSHOT SESSION

I always love working with this young child model and actress.  I've had the pleasure of photographing her a few times over the years and she is just a doll to work with.  She's an ideal candidate to model or act because she has such natural beauty and a very exotic look.  She also has a very in demand modeling and acting look known as ethnically ambiguous.  On top of that she's very photogenic.  (More about that in another blog post.)

Here's a selection of shots from her recent modeling and acting headshot session.

Quirky shot-- young actress headshot
Even though she's very beautiful, it was important to capture one of her acting headshots with some quirk or showing some range as an actress.  Commercially this is very important because casting directors will scan hundreds to thousands of actors headshots looking for the kids or teens who fit the look of the role.  If they want a kid who is fun, upbeat and with an interesting face they might pull the headshot above because it fits that role.

Commercial, high energy, fun kid headshot
Here she is showing lots of energy for one of her commercial headshot looks.  Kids headshots should show that the child is outgoing and not shy for commercials castings.  Energy and personality are really important for kids who want to be cast in commercials.

Should my child start modeling?

Many parents are interested in getting their child started as a model.  Modeling for kids is big business.  Kids clothing lines are sprouting up everywhere and they always need kids to model.  As well children grow quickly, so that means talent agents and child modeling agents will need to replace all of these child models.  Talent agents and child modeling agencies are always scouting for new faces.

What are some of the requirements to get my kid started in modeling?

Modeling Kids
Child Modeling
Child Modeling requires kids that are comfortable with others and kids that like to be photographed.
Child Modeling
Kids and Modeling

Kids who model must also feel comfortable around other adults.  Often there will be numerous adults on the shoot who are working the lights, wardrobe, make-up etc.
Teenage Models
Teenage Modeling
Kids and teenagers who are successful at modeling often have strong features.  Exotic looks, beautiful smiles, stunning eyes or a mop of curly red hair are all great looks for modeling.  If your child has a look that stops others dead in their tracks, they enjoy being photographed and are comfortable meeting people, they would probably be a good candidate as a child model.
