Kids Headshots and how do I get a talent agent for my children? 
 

As a kid's headshot photographer I have helped countless parents over the years get their child a talent agent or talent manager.  Many parents have called me to book their kid's headshot appointment and it comes up in the conversation that the child does not yet have an agent.  The parent is often concerned about some of the scams out there, yet wants to pursue representation and help their child get started in the industry.  In this post I share info about getting a talent agent with your kid's headshots.

 The bottom line is you need to get your child or teenager in front of a kids talent agent.  There are several ways of doing this including personal referral, kids acting class or the third way is to submit your child's headshots to the agencies.

A great kids headshot can get your child in front of a talent agent!

In all cases you will need to have a great kid's headshot as this is the first thing the agent wants to see.  Continue reading for the details on the three different ways to get your child in front of a Los Angeles talent agent.  In the meantime here's some examples of excellent kid's headshots:

Even though they are dealing with kids, it is still a business and professionalism is very much expected.  I can't tell you how many times a new client has told me they sent out snap shots or photos of their kids and they didn't get a response from the agent.  Subsequent to our conversation, I did the child or teens headshots, I gave the parent some guidance and then I receive a thank you note from the parent who has now found a talent agent for their budding young actor.  What got them in the door?  A great kid's headshot!

A kids headshot should be taken by a professional top headshot photographer so that your image stands out, gets noticed and lets the agent know you are ready to proceed as a professional.   As you can see this is not just a snapshot or iphone photo.  It is a professional kid's headshot which gets the attention of talent agents, talent managers and casting directors.

 A personal referral to a talent agent or talent manager can come through an acting coach, a children's headshot photographer or maybe you have a friend who is willing to give your child's headshot to a talent agent they are connected to.  Agents are always looking for talented and outgoing kids.   In any case the agent will want to see your kid's headshot before scheduling a meeting or audition.   Here is another sample of a great kid's headshot.

Option two is to sign your child up for a reputable kid's acting class.   Many acting schools have showcases.  This is when students perform and talent agents and talent managers are invited to watch.   The agents go to these showcases to scout new kids.   Kids will still need to have their professional acting headshot ready to give to the agent during the showcase.  Be prepared with an amazing kid's headshot! The third option involves mass mailing your kid's headshot to talent agencies and letting them know you are seeking representation.  Most agents are now accepting email and website submissions or you can snail mail it in as well.  If you are one of my clients I will provide you with a list of agents to submit to.   An excellent kid's headshot will get noticed and can get your child in the door.

Kids Headshots and 3 Ways To Increase Auditions

If you're not getting auditions, it's hard to book the job.  What can you do?  Well, you could start complaining to your agent, but this will probably kill any further opportunities.   The last thing an agent or manager wants to hear is a parent or an actor complaining.  This often translates to, "You're not doing your job".   Appreciating your talent reps should be at the top of your list, because these hardworking folks are pushing daily and submitting your kids headshots like crazy to get those auditions, and they don't make a penny until you book.  Having an actor just sit on the shelf doesn't do the agent any good--believe me, they want to get you out there and auditioning as much as possible.  So what can you do to increase auditions? Having a great headshot is vital, but is not the only thing to do.  Scroll down to see some great tips including creative ways to use your kids headshots.

A great kids headshot is always helpful to get an audition but there's also other things you should do.

So you got your kids headshots and now what?  In a job, relationship or any area of life, one has to keep creating, improving and promoting.  Otherwise it might not be known or that thing will wither away or be forgotton.   For example a friendship may wither away if you don't create it, but inviting a friend to dinner keeps the relationship flourishing.   Secondly if you improve your home, it becomes worth more, people notice it and may compliment you on it, and you feel better about it.  And thirdly, it may be necessary to promote yourself if you want a new job, to get in college, or even to get a new boyfriend, otherwise they may not know you exist.  It's the same with acting-you should  create, improve and promote.  Here are some examples of doing this using your creativity and your awesome kids headshots:

CREATE THINGS THAT SHOW YOU OFF
You could sign up for an actors showcase and invite your agent, manager or casting directors to come see you perform a scene. You could create a new character on a youtube channel--like Miranda Sings or Fred.  Put your acting headshot as your profile or at the beginning of each new episode. Or how about creating a dance reel showing your best moves and then forward it to your reps.  Make sure you include at the end of the clip your kids acting headshot.

To increase auditions, make a reel or a clip of your child's skills and then make sure you include at the end your kids headshots.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
Get better at something and take a new class like improv, scene study, dance, singing, voice, dialect, a new sport, etc.  There are a zillion classes available in LA and skills are always needed with actors.  A few years ago my daughter got an audition for a national commercial with her beginning piano skills, she then booked it, but it was the skills that helped her in the door because the actor had to be able to play basic piano. (She also had a great kids headshot!  Watch it here: Straight Talk commercial (It's a funny spot and they put fake braces on her to create more character.)   Also, if you find ways to improve yourself like acting classes, when the auditions come in you have a better chance of getting the callback.  With more callbacks your auditions will go up because your reps have more confidence in you and the cd remembers you, because you are a skilled actor.  You may not have been right for the part, but they will call you in again for other roles.  You can learn a new sport, practice accents or dialects or improve upon one you already have.  All of these things add up to a more marketable actor.  Then, pair these skills with a great headshot and the promotion tips below which outline how to promote your kids headshots.

PROMOTE YOUR KIDS HEADSHOTS
We all know who Target, McDonalds and Honda are, but have you seen how much they promote?  If you look at most successful companies they promote.  How can you do this as an actor?  Sign up for some cd workshops.  Oh and make sure you give the casting director your kid's headshot.  Do an actors showcase and pass out your acting headshots to the casting directors or people who attend after the show.  Or, send a clip of your amazing dance moves to your agent. Send a 1 minute video clip of your child's incredible double-dutch skills (that she just learned). Your rep may even want the skill posted on LA Casting.  And by all means get your kids or teens new headshots so the agent has something fresh to promote with and casting gets to see the current you.  Use these headshots to promote.  For example you can order business cards with one of your kids headshots on it to pass out, or send a postcard with three new headshot looks to casting.  Put a note that you got new headshots and include any recent bookings. Kids headshots and talking eyes

Recently I had a client who called to tell me how much she loved her child's headshots.  Her daughter was new to the industry and a bit nervous about being in front of the camera.  I worked with her quite a bit throughout the headshot photo session and took the time needed to get the child to communicate to the camera.  Later, when the mom was thanking me she mentioned that she couldn't believe how much her daughters eyes were talking.  Bam, mission accomplished!  That's one of the most important things in an actor or kid's headshot and something that will grab the attention of a casting director or talent agent.

 Casting directors are looking at and sifting thru actor's headshots all day long.  If the eyes communicate, the cd (casting director) will click on that kids headshot.

Kids headshots should communicate from the eyes

In an child actors headshot the eyes can communicate something that shows they are good for the role. For example, in the above kids headshot, she is communicating comedy and her eyes are saying quirky and funny.  It has a dash of sarcasm which you often see in comedic TV roles. 

In the teen headshot below you can see confidence in his eyes.  They almost cut right thru you, but at the same time they are not mean or aggressive.  The eyes speak confidence and certainty.

In a kids or teen headshot showing confidence is very important.  The eyes should speak this.

Casting directors often mention how important confidence is for an actor, so if your kid's headshot speaks confidence in their expression (you can see this in the eyes), the cd will be more apt to stop and look further.   Another great example of confidence which also shows charisma can be seen below...those eyes are definitely talking in this kid's headshot.

A great way to save money on your child's acting headshots is to book either a sibling session or book with a friend!  You can bring up to two other siblings or bring two other kids (friends, cousins etc.) and you will save up to $100 on each child.

A normal headshot session for a child or teen actor ages 5-17 years is $295.  Add one additional actor and the rate is $495 total for both.  You can add a third actor for $100!  Total session fee for 3 kids is $595.

KIDS HEADSHOTS and ACTING RESUMES FOR KIDS

You have a great kids headshot and now you need to add the acting resume.   In this post I will give you basic info about acting resumes for kids and young actors.

Once you have your kids headshot printed you will need to staple a resume to the back.  

Once you have your kids headshots printed you will need to add the resume.  Since kid headshots are printed in size 8x10 and paper is usually 8.5x11 you will need to either trim the paper or you can order 8x10 resume paper from my favorite headshot lab for actors - Argentum photo lab.  They specialize in actors headshot printing but also have other items for actors.  ( I always recommend getting your kids headshot printed at a professional lab.)

Your acting resume should list your name at the top in bold with contact info right below.  You will also state if your belong to one of the acting unions SAG or AFTRA. Then you list acting credits, training and any special skills.  Normally you list in this order: Film credits, TV, theater, training, skills.  For kids with little to no credits you can list commercials until they have stronger credits to show they have set experience.  However, normally you don't list commercials on acting resumes.  You also never list dates or address info.  

Here is a basic format for an actors resume that I found on the web: Acting Resume Sample.  Notice no dates and no address.  You should however add training and any strong skills below the credits.  Training could be dance, voice lessons, acting classes etc.  Skills would be sports, dance, music and anything that your child actor is very good at.  List the training and skills in columns and similar format as the credits.   Casting Directors will often scan the resume quickly and you want your kids resume to be easy to read. 

What if my child has no credits to list on their resume?

Most people or children who are interested in acting will have something they can list until they get stronger credits.  You can start by listing any school, dance or church performances and then when they start working replace those.  It may not be a network show, but it does show your child has or likes to perform.  If you don't have any credits to list you should put skills and any training that would be valuable for an agent or casting director to know about.  If you speak a foreign language list it.   Many child actors start out with a sparse resume and then continue to add credits as they book.  A great acting headshot is going to get your kids noticed and from there they will begin to build their credits.  If your child is very young they may not even have skills yet, but you would still staple a resume which list contact info, hair color etc to the back of the kids headshot.
