This is a child modeling photo sample from a recent session.  Many parents get their child started in acting and modeling at a young age and child modeling is often the perfect way to start.  For one, child modeling is easier then acting.  They don't have to say lines, they don't have to act, you just need the right look to be a kid model.

I love bright colors on young kids for acting headshots.  This is a classic example of a great kids headshot.  Gorgeous, full smile, smiley eyes, beautiful color for her skin & hair.  The agent chose this as a main commercial headshot and it will also be part of her modeling portfolio.

Here's a sample of a fabulous "theatrical" headshot kids headshot.  Theatrical headshots are for TV & Film castings.  A serious photo like above is used for drama type roles.  This photo also works well for a child model portfolio.

As you can see make up for a kids headshot or child modeling session should be very, very natural.  Little to no make up is best for child models or child actors.  She is not wearing make up.  Many kids have such nice wonderful color in the skin tone & lips, so sometimes no make up is needed.  Typically For Child models and child actors, I like a little bit of clear mascara, lip gloss or Burts Bees Tinted Lip Balms and maybe a very light dusting of mineral based powder.  The one I like is from Mac Cosmetics.

Child Modeling. Avoiding scams with actors and models.

You have a beautiful child or your kid seems to have a great look for child modeling.  In fact you've often been told "You should get your kid a talent agent!"  "Your child would be such a great model!"  "You should get your kids headshots and get him an agent!"  "Your child is perfect for commercials." "We would love to bring your kid in for a screentest to try him out for acting and modeling".   You hear it often that your child would be perfect as a kid model or child actor and of course who doesn't feel good when you hear such nice comments.  Many times these comments are well intended by nice folks, but there is another group of people that like to scam on nice families who are trying to get their child started in acting or modeling.  How do you know if it's a child modeling or child acting scam?  Can you trust the person who say's their a hollywood talent agent and they want to sign your child up for acting or modeling?

Talent agents do not ask for money.  They do not ask you to pay them for representation.  All talent agents work on commission and they do not get paid unless your child model or child actor is getting paid.  An actor has to book a part and get paid and the agency will make a commission from this.  If someone is asking you for money to represent your child and promises to get you auditions when you pay them, this is a scam.  Agents can't promise you auditions and they will work hard to get your child actor or child model auditions but they do not charge money for this.  They want your child actor or model to get auditions, which can lead to booking parts.  Once you get a booking, then the kids talent agent will get paid.

I'll talk more about modeling and acting scams in future post and how to avoid shelling out hundreds and thousands of dollars for your child or teenage model.  It's really not a necessary part of getting your child or kids started in modeling or acting.  In the meantime if someone ask you to pay for representation or to pay for a talent agent for your wanna be superstar, then you should continue looking for a legitimate agency.

Should my child start modeling?

Many parents are interested in getting their child started as a model.  Modeling for kids is big business.  Kids clothing lines are sprouting up everywhere and they always need kids to model.  As well children grow quickly, so that means talent agents and child modeling agents will need to replace all of these child models.  Talent agents and child modeling agencies are always scouting for new faces.

What are some of the requirements to get my kid started in modeling?

 

Child Modeling

 Child Modeling requires kids that are comfortable with others and kids that like to be photographed.

Kids and Modeling

Kids who model must also feel comfortable around other adults.  Often there will be numerous adults on the shoot who are working the lights, wardrobe, make-up etc.

Teenage Modeling

 Kids and teenagers who are successful at modeling often have strong features.  Exotic looks, beautiful smiles, stunning eyes or a mop of curly red hair are all great looks for modeling.  If your child has a look that stops others dead in their tracks, they enjoy being photographed and are comfortable meeting people, they would probably be a good candidate as a child model.
