Twins.

Two is better then one!  At least that's what Hollywood thinks when it comes to working with very young children.   That's because there are labor laws for children actors and their work hours are restricted.  The younger the child actor, the less they can work.

If a casting director can cast twin babies, twin toddlers or twin four year olds, it will save the company a great deal of time in getting the shots.  And we all know time is money.  While one child actor is on a break or finished working, the other child actor can finish the shots.  This is especially important when it comes to babies and infant actors because they have a very limited amount of time by law that the child can work.  Once a young actor turns 6 years old they can be on set for a longer period, but prior to age 6 the work hours are very, very limited.

Usually when it comes to twin actor headshots I like to take individual photos of each child and then photos of the two together.  This way they can audition for separate roles and also audition for the same part.  Most talent agents like to have a headshot with both child actors together and also individual headshots as well.

How Often Should I Update My Kid's Headshots?

I often have parents asking me when they should update their kids headshots.  Six months, nine months, a year?  Honestly this can vary with young actors.  There are a few things to take into consideration when answering this question.

The MOST important time to update your kids headshots is when they look different.  Have their teeth changed?  Have they grown three inches?  Do they have a different hair cut or hair style?  Has their face filled out?  Do they look like their headshot?  Is their face fuller, older, thinner? Do they have braces now? The basic question you should ask yourself is "Will the casting director meet the exact actor they see in the headshot?"

Kids go thru growth spurts and change quickly so they have to update their headshots more often then an adult actor.  Adults sometimes wait two to three years between headshot sessions.  But a child actor can change in appearance rapidly, so a kids headshot should be updated more often.  Consider the difference in appearance between the age of ten and thirteen years.    Usually the younger the child the more obvious the changes in their appearance. 

Kids headshots should be updated more often the adult headshots.  Typically a child may need to update their headshot every six months to one year.

Again the younger the actor the more often you need to update the shots.  A baby looks completely different from age 3 months to 9 months.  That's why most talent agents are willing to accept non-professional headshots or photos for babies.  Casting directors want to see what the child looks like right now and know that is who they are bringing in for the acting audition.  If Disney or Nickelodeon casting is seeking a baby to play two years old and your child has headshots from one year ago, they will most likely miss that opportunity to get called in for an audition.  And if they do get called in you will greatly disappoint the casting director!

Teenage headshots

Another thing to consider is if the headshot has gone stale or if things have slowed down.  I have observed that my most successful clients do not wait to get an updated headshot.  This includes both celebrity child actors, celebrity teen actors and also the working child actors who stay busy booking commercials and TV roles, but you may not recognize them yet.  When there is a pause in auditions or things have slowed down a little bit, they are on it and updating those headshots.  You have to realize that casting may see the photo day in and day out for months at a time.

Remember that children's headshots and actors headshots are a tool...a promotional tool.  We all know about Honda, Nike, State Farm and Geico but they don't stop promoting to us.  Otherwise we slowly forget about them or don't think about them when we are shopping for new insurance or their products.  And if we saw the same commercial for 1 year we would be a little sick of it.  It can be the same in casting TV and commercials.

In the business of entertaining, personality is very important.  Many agents like to have a personality shot as part of the actors portfolio.  It won't usually be the main shot but it can be used as an additional image to show an child actors personality and playfulness.

Tax Time! Argh!

It's that time of the year and April 15 is just around the corner!  Did your child or teenage actor book a commercial or even multiple commercials?  Did they work a tv show?   Many people are surprised when their child actor gets a big tax bill or when they see how much has been taken out of paychecks from commercials, tv and film jobs.  And although I am not an accountant or legal advisor in this area I can say there are many things you can do to save on taxes or help get a bit of return on that money that was taken out for taxes.  Of course always get the advise of your accountant or CPA!

I just finished reading a great article that gives some nice tips on potential expense write offs for actors.  After reading this you may want to check with your accountant on what your child can deduct when he/she makes money from professional acting jobs.  Here's the article: Add Up Your Actors Tax Deductions.

It's never to early to get organized in this area even if you haven't made any money yet.  Like the saying goes "Knowledge is Power" and that can result in money power.  Saving receipts and keeping good records can be a lifesaver at the end of the year if your child earned a sizeable income.  It's an exciting time when your child books an acting job and they can even make an adult income, but don't be caught off guard by not knowing the laws relating to actors and taxes.

A great way to save money on your child's acting headshots is to book either a sibling session or book with a friend!  You can bring up to two other siblings or bring two other kids (friends, cousins etc.) and you will save up to $100 on each child.

A normal headshot session for a child or teen actor ages 5-17 years is $295.  Add one additional actor and the rate is $495 total for both.  You can add a third actor for $100!  Total session fee for 3 kids is $595.

Twice or triple the fun and save a bundle!  To qualify for this rate you must shoot at the same time, same day.

Love the choice of clothing that mom brought to this young actors headshot session.  By mixing up the hairstyles and clothing we were able to project "girl next door" and "edgy, urban" looks.  Since she is a dancer we wanted to be able to show an interesting hip hop vibe.  The colors are a beautiful contrast with her gorgeous skin tone.  The agent chose six headshots to use for her actors profile...here are three of them.

From a recent kids headshot session.  Am loving his look for modeling!  Although he has a great personality for acting, (especially comedic tv roles), he also has a fabulous look for modeling.  He is perfect for a Ralph Lauren ad or I could see him in a French children's clothing line.  His look is also good for edgy, urban and hip clothing or products.  In any case he's he's handsome and the camera loves him!

A bit about photogenic models and actors.

"She's very photogenic!"  "Photographers lover her!"  "The camera loves her!"  These are comments that you hear about top models and some actors.  Funny enough you don't have to be beautiful to be photogenic.  Some kids photograph amazingly well in their headshots or modeling portfolio yet they are not that striking or gorgeous in real life. 

Does your child have to be photogenic  to model or act?  The short answer is no.  Modeling for the most part does look for a photogenic face and body, but there are some types of modeling such as editorial that may just want a regular or very normal looking face.  These might be ads for cell phones, insurance or products where they want the audience to relate to the people in the ad.  As for acting many types are needed.  You can see this if you watch TV and film...they are not all beautiful, gorgeous or striking.

A photogenic child may have very fair skin that is translucent or picks up the light very nicely and then translates into a very interesting or striking photo.  Very blonde or red hair often photographs well because it also picks up the light or reflects the light well.  Light eyes and dark hair can look amazing in a portrait or headshot.  A full afro and very, deep, dark skin is gorgeous but I would same the same about light green eyes and mixed ethnic skin tones.  There are so many things that can be gorgeous in a photo, but definitely there are some looks that really stand out and would be considered photogenic. 

Sometimes with kid actors it's just that the face communicates a lot to people...such as lots of freckles and dimples.

Charm and knowing  how to use your body for the camera can have a lot to do with being photogenic.  Often a child or teenage model has a natural ability when in front of the camera and naturally stands or moves well when being photographed.
