What to wear for a child model photo shoot, part 2.

In the last post, I went over some of the clothing that you shouldn't bring to a child modeling photo shoot.  In this post, I'll go over some of the "do's" of clothing choices.

1.  Do bring colors that work well with your child's skin tone, hair & eyes.
Some of the photos that we will shoot are close up showing the face.  Basically a headshot or a very close up shot that shows the eyes and any interesting features.  Having a color that brings out the eyes can really show them off.  And in general having colors that work well with skin tones and hair can also be very complimentary to the model.  See the second photo below for an example of this.  The child model has dark eyes, hair & skin which contrast so nicely against the blue jacket.

Colors that contrast with the hair, eyes and skin are always a good choice when getting your child's modeling photos taken.

2.  Do bring some simple accessories such as hats, beanies, headbands, scarfs, etc.

Okay, some agents do not want to see hats or hair pieces and some do.  Just know that there can be varying opinions on this in the industry.  The key is that it should not be the focus of the photo. The model is the focus, not the clothing.  I recommend you always check with your modeling agent to find out if they have specific do's and don'ts.   Basically you should bring options to the photo shoot and then the photographer will determine which clothing and accessories will be used for the models photos.  In the child model photo below, the hat really brings attention to her eyes.

Bring hats, beanies or assorted accessories to your child modeling photo session.

You can bring simple hair pieces or headbands to your child modeling photo session.

For boys you can accessorize with beanies, ties, hats and suspenders.

3.  Bring some full body options and some close up options.  Some people like to wear something from different seasons.  Example a bathing suit or shorts & top, and then a winter look.  Or you can choose a JCrew type preppy look and then a more high fashion look.  The key is that The clothing will show how you are proportioned and how the clothes hang on you. (Remember no very baggy looks that hide your body).  Although we may only need to shoot 3/4 looks, it's a good idea to bring some shoes or boots that complete the look.

child modeling wardrobe ideas.

 If you are familiar with the Instagram site "Fashion Kids", you can see that modern, trendy kids and the latest adult fashion on kids is very popular.  And who doesn't like to look at celebrities and what they're wearing?  It's not just the public that like to see interesting fashion and great photos.  I've observed that modeling talent agents also respond very well to hip, urban looks and fashionable kids.

I like to show some classic looks or typical kids clothing but also ensure we photograph a hip and trendy outfit for a child model photography session.

Zebra stripes look adorable on this little girl and worked very well for this child modeling headshot. And although this shirt is a bit out of the box for a standard kids headshot, it actually works very well with her exotic looks.  As for modeling this image is perfect for a ZED card or model composite card.

This photo grabbed the attention of a top acting and modeling talent agency in Los Angeles.

 If you are thinking about putting your child into modeling you will need a talent or modeling agent.  To get an agent you will need to send in photos of your child.  If you want to sign with a good talent agency, get great photos!  They will get noticed!  This little actress/model did not have an agent before I photographed her, but she was immediately picked up for representation by a top child acting and modeling talent agency as soon as they sent her photos in.  This was one of the photos I recommended to the mom to use for submitting to the talent agent.  And in fact she was called by several talent agents that showed interest after they sent out the photos.  


When putting together looks and wardrobe for your child's modeling photo session,  I recommend you take some time to get inspired before choosing what clothing to bring.  Take a look at the advertising for Zara Kids or the these wonderful, bright color combinations for JCrew Kids.

Colors are always a great choice for modeling photo sessions.

I love to use bright, cheerful or popping colors when photographing child or young teen models.

Color, scarfs and striped leggings work well in modeling portfolios.

Color and texture work so well in this beautiful, young modeling shot. 

Layers always work for a kids fashion or modeling photo.

Think outside the box when choosing clothing for your child's modeling photo session. Mix it up...conservative looks with a bit of music industry vibe.

Scarfs are a great way to add attention to the eyes for a child model.  Use colors that enhance the models look.

Layers, layers, layers are always a good choice for kids modeling wardrobe.

Choose colors that are cheerful, yet work with the child's skin tone.

Fun, colorful and mixing patterns always works for child modeling photos.

Child modeling or kids headshots should show off the kids best features.  In this child's headshot it's all about those amazing eyes.  So do bring some simple clothing to the headshot or photo session. 

Not all of the wardrobe for kids headshots and modeling photos needs to be trendy and high fashion.  In fact, it's important to have many simple kids headshots for the talent agent to choose from that show off the eyes and face of the child actor or model.  I love using texture and color to show off the eyes when photographing child models and or kids headshots. 

Think outside of the box and buy things that you may not normally choose for your kids headshot or modeling photo session.  Suspenders with jeans, colored pants, tweed jacket with a polka dot shirt or even two layers underneath.  This may not be the way your child will normally dress for school, but it works very well for a modeling portfolio or modeling and headshot session.

Child modeling photos and kids headshots usually include some personality shots.  This kids headshot used for modeling is the playful, preppy and smart kid look.  And this look is not only good for a child modeling portfolio but also can be used for a character kids headshot.  

Typically talent agents don't want hands, hats or hoods, but sometimes you break the rules and it works. 

Mixing colors that work well together is a great way to keep it simple, yet vibrant in a child modeling photo.  And if the child model is also an actor, we can take off the scarf and get some great headshots with the jacket alone.

And remember with kids we want to show some energy.  A fun shot that has a big smile is an important photo for the child's modeling portfolio.  You don't  have to spend a lot of money to add some flair.  Supsender or a bow tie, or even a tie for a girl can be a simple way to change the look.

Child modeling photoshoots should always be fun for the kids! 

You can show a conservative look, but do it with flair.  Try looking at some Parisian, preppy models and or fashion and use this for your inspiration.  There is no lack of inspiration on the internet.  Just search fashion, Bambini Vogue or things some  high end clothing lines for kids.  And remember, if you shoot with Robin Lorraine Photography,  I will always provide you with tips and inspiration for the shoot.

Child Modeling Photo Session.

I absolutely love it when a client comes to me with a fabulous wardrobe for their kids acting headshots or a child modeling photo session.  Giving a photographer plenty of options is in my book-mandatory.  You don't have to buy a new wardrobe, but it's important to bring a good selection of choices, especially with the tops.

If you only need kids headshots then the bottoms or pants aren't important.  However, if your child is a candidate for kids modeling, then by all means bring some options for the full body shots.  Pants, jeans, khakis, shorts, skirts, boots, leggings are all good clothing choices to bring for a child modeling  session.  You can also bring a hat or some accessories which can be used with the modeling photos.  Your photographer will go thru the clothing and choose which ones they are going to use.

Child Modeling in Los Angeles

 This little guy stole my heart!  He was so natural in front of the camera and such a delight to photograph.  Every once in a while I come across a very young child that has natural instincts when being photographed.  They just seem to be very comfortable and relaxed when you take their photo.  

Love the layers and colors that mom brought for the photo shoot.  Bright colors and layers translate very well for child ZED cards and modeling portfolios.
