musical theater casting

This beautiful quadruple threat child did her headshot session and then went and booked a role in the ever popular, Tony Award winning musical "Annie".  The show is at  http://www.centerstagefontana.com/ theater.

This is one of her new acting headshots below which she is using for the playbill and the show.

a child's headshot photo session.

Lately the industry has been very busy.  Not only do we have pilot season (which is just winding down), we also have so many more networks like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube Red etc.  This is fabulous news for young actors as there are a lot more audition opportunities.

Since I've been so busy, I haven't had a chance to post much.  But, I've had so many wonderful kids headshot session's lately and, fortunately the weather has been cooperating.   I would love to post all of the kids headshots, or modeling photos that I've recently shot, but there are only so many hours in the day.   I do post on my facebook headshot page and my instagram headshot page as well, so you can view additional children and teen headshots there.  In the meantime here are a couple of the agent choices from Gracie's recent child's headshot photo session:
A great kids commercial headshot with fabulous energy and likeability.  A kids commercial headshot should always have good energy and be very likeable.  The colors in her outfit are also energetic which add to her vibrant and beautiful smile.
Kids headshots usually include commercial shots, theatrical shots for tv & film and personality or character shots which may show you as different types.  The above headshot is a commercial headshot which typically shows fabulous energy and likeability.  Smiles are required for this type of photo.

The headshot below is also a commercial headshot.  Usually an agent will choose 3-6 images for their commercial portfolio or LA Casting profile.  This headshot is a personality or a character kids headshot.

Character child's headshot.
The character child's headshot should show just that...personality and character.  Some agents will use these for Disney or Nickelodeon auditions and such, but typically they are good for commercial auditions.  I just love her smile and sparkling eyes in this character kids headshot.

When you are ready to book your child's headshot session, we will go over what type of wardrobe and looks your child should have for their headshots.  In the meantime "happy auditioning".

Updating your kids headshots for episodic TV season.

Episodic season in LA is a time where all the new television shows and the past or ongoing TV series film upcoming episodes which will begin airing soon.  It is a very busy time in Hollywood and a great time to get some fantastic auditions. Episodic season is from August to November.

Child actors can audition a lot during episodic season or things can be dry.  But if it's dry you know one thing...you need to see if you have all the right tools in place.  The very first thing that you need to ensure you have in place is a current acting headshot.  You will need a printed 8x10 headshot and your kids should have current headshots posted to their actors online profiles.

Why is it so important to update your kids headshot
kids headshot which is shown to casting directors during episodic season.
Kids headshot for tv roles.
during episodic season?  Because your kids headshot is the first thing a casting director will see when they receive submissions from the talent agent.   Casting directors will see approx 50 kids headshots in thumbnail sizes on each page, as they scroll thru hundreds of child actors who have been submitted for the role.  You want them to stop on your kid's headshot and click it for further information.  At that point they may look at additional headshots that your child has posted.  They may also look at the resume, an actors reel, or notes from the agent.  So your children's headshot is not the only thing that a casting director will see, but it is the FIRST thing they will see.

Make sure to update your kids headshots often!

What clothing should I bring for my kids headshot photo session?

One of the most asked questions I get regarding headshots is "What should I bring for my kids headshot session?"  Well, there are two question you should ask yourself:

  1. What colors look good on my child?
  2. What types of acting roles could my child be cast as?

Try to choose colors that work well on your kids. Not everyone looks good in yellow, but against some skin tones yellow is gorgeous.  I'll go in depth about color in a future blog post, but the basic rule is to make sure the color doesn't wash you out and that it compliments the eyes, skin and hair.

After you think about the "types" you can think about how this can be projected in an actors headshot.  However, there is something to keep in mind...
The clothing for a kids headshot session should not be distracting.
The clothing should not be distracting in a kids headshot and the colors should work well with your kids eyes, skin and hair.
...actor headshots should not be about the clothing, it should be about the actor.  You want to remember the reason for the headshot in the first place, which is to show "you" (or your child), to the casting director.  Casting is scrolling thru thousands of actors headshots (in thumbnail form) all day long looking to find an actor who fits the role they are casting.
Actor headshots and wardrobe choices.
This kids headshot projects comedy & nerd.
When choosing the clothing for your kids headshot session, list out a few of the "types" that you can play and then select some wardrobe pieces that communicate those types.  A leather jacket is not  the "sweet, girl next door", but can definitely project some edge.  And the "bookish type" doesn't have to be a full on nerd, but can be as simple as a collared shirt with a sweater vest and of course a great expression.

Not all of your headshots have to hint at a type and in fact your main headshot should just be "you" on a great day.  I think the best way to approach this is to use colors that work really well with your skin tones and eyes like in the first image at the beginning of this post.

If your kids headshot is all about the wardrobe or seems to be a costume, then casting will not take you seriously.  Casting directors have a keen eye and are used to looking at actors headshots.  They don't want to see an actor in a costume, so choose pieces that hint at a type, but don't go overboard which screams amateur.  No need for props or a full on uniform.  However, there are some exceptions in the commercial casting and or print modeling world which I will go over in a future post.
