A great headshot can open doors--teen headshot session.

Recently wrapped a headshot session with a beautiful, aspiring teen actress.  We did the session, chose the shots she should submit to talent agents and then those images had to be retouched.

Once my re-toucher was done with those I emailed her mom the files.  Within two days her mom emailed me back with exciting news--she had was already contacted by two talent agents and both wanted to bring her in for a meeting!   Her mother said the agent loved her headshots.  And that's how you rock it folks!

RECENT ACTOR BOOKINGS

Actors are auditioning all the time, so when they book it's very exciting.  I'd like to give a shout out to these young actors who recently booked a commercial or tv role.

Congratulations to Natalie O'Malley who just booked a confidential commercial.  Many projects these days require actors to sign a non-disclosure contract.  If the commercial advertiser or tv show doesn't want information about the shoot disclosed to the public they will have you sign this when you audition.

My daughter Jasmine just booked a role on the ABC family show The Fosters.  Needless to say she had a great time and we look forward to seeing the  episode air in Feb or March.

Modeling and headshot session with child actor--boys.

I always feel privileged to photograph young actors.  They have so much personality and typically we laugh a lot and play around.

This session was no different and Austin did a wonderful job for such a young age.  It takes some patients for a boy to be photographed because I often need them to hold still to get the shot, but still be natural and in good communication with the camera.  His headshots turned out great and he has plenty of looks for both acting and modeling.

Here's a few shots from his session:

BOYS, MODELING AND ACTING a recent headshot session

Had such a great time with Mathew during his headshot and modeling photo session.  A very talented young dancer and a Michael Jackson impersonator!  He even did a Michael Jackson dance and routine for me.

I love that his mom brought such a great selection of cheerful colors for his headshots.  Young kids should have plenty of colorful options for their headshots because the image really pops and it is very age appropriate.  Headshots should always be youthful and bright colors help pull this out.  When you book a session with me I send you plenty of information regarding wardrobe and colors.

TEEN ACTORS --a headshot session with an 18TPY actress.

If you're a teenage actor or actress then you may be familiar with the term 18TPY.  Otherwise known as 18 to play younger.  Productions companies would rather use an actor to play younger because they save money.  If an actor can play highschool but is actually 18 years and graduated, then the film company doesn't have to pay for a set teacher.  Additionally the actor can work more hours then a minor.  That equates to "saved money".  Business's like to save money and so you can't forget this is show "business".

When I photograph an 18TPY actors headshots, I like to give them some range and show them as high school age and then bump it up a little bit for the adult roles they can play.

Here's a couple of images from a recent headshot session with an 18TPY actress.

RECENT KIDS MODELING AND HEADSHOT SESSION

I always love working with this young child model and actress.  I've had the pleasure of photographing her a few times over the years and she is just a doll to work with.  She's an ideal candidate to model or act because she has such natural beauty and a very exotic look.  She also has a very in demand modeling and acting look known as ethnically ambiguous.  On top of that she's very photogenic.  (More about that in another blog post.)

Here's a selection of shots from her recent modeling and acting headshot session.

Quirky shot-- young actress headshot
Even though she's very beautiful, it was important to capture one of her acting headshots with some quirk or showing some range as an actress.  Commercially this is very important because casting directors will scan hundreds to thousands of actors headshots looking for the kids or teens who fit the look of the role.  If they want a kid who is fun, upbeat and with an interesting face they might pull the headshot above because it fits that role.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD BEGIN ACTING AND MODELING?

I've spoken to many parents who want to get their child started in modeling or acting and they often have the question "Is my child the right age to start?"  There is no right or wrong age.  The important thing is whether the family is able to support it and the child or teen is interested.

If you have a baby or toddler, really only you can determine if your child is ready.  Are they very comfortable with adults, good natured and generally cheerful?  These are good indications that they are fit for starting a career at a very young age.  The key here is that there will be a lot of driving all over Los Angeles if they have auditions, so you want to make sure your child will be comfortable with this.  Typically twins, triplets and kids who are small for their age are in much bigger demand.

If your kids are age 5 and up, you can consult with them and see if they are interested. They are at an age where they can easily communicate what they like and dislike and are comfortable with.  I find that most of the kids in this business have asked their parents to do this or are even pushing the parents to get them going. It doesn't take coaxing and persuading.  They want to act, model, dance, sing etc.  They are not shy or introverted.

Once your kids have hit the tween or teen years they will make it known if they are interested and want to pursue acting or modeling. You would be hard pressed to try to drag a tween boy to auditions if he wasn't interested.  If they like to perform or are asking to try this it is the right time to start the process of headshots, agent hunting, classes etc.

As far as the industry goes, they are always on the look out for young people.  Babies, kids and teens grow and change and agents need new faces all the time.   Kids have a lot of opportunity and if they are natural performers or are reaching to do this, then it might be a good time to look into getting an agent.

If your child or teen is ready to get an agent call me to book your headshot session Tel: 323-466-0585 or view my website @ Robin Lorraine Photography or Facebook Robin Lorraine.

POSING AND HEADSHOTS

For those actors who are beginning their career or not very experienced in front of the camera posing tips can be very helpful.  The funny thing is that you need to adjust your body in different ways so your headshot looks great, but at the same time it must look very natural.  Here are a few tips that you may want to practice or keep in mind before your headshot session.  If this is for your children's headshots then you can even go over this with them and show them some photos as good examples.  Although, with kids keep it light and fun, don't get too serious about it or give them too much direction.  We want them to be relaxed.

Posture:
No slouching during a headshot session.  Make sure when you stand you don't stick your belly out, hunch your shoulders or slouch.  When sitting the same applies. Take a look at this example showing correct sitting posture.   A good headshot photographer will usually point out to stand tall,  drop your shoulders, pull in belly etc.

Don't over pose:
Many times kids tend to over pose when you pull the camera out.  They distort the body, turn sideways and throw the belly way out or tilt the head.  Often kids who have done pageant work will overpose because in the pageant world they encourage this in young ones.  With acting and modeling headshots it has to be very real and natural. Tilted heads might be fine in a photograph, but with headshots you want it to be directly into the camera as much as possible.  This is really important nowadays because a tilted shot in a tiny thumbnail does not pop off the page and it causes the casting director to have to turn their head to view it better.

Keep your hands away from your face:
Typically in headshots a casting director doesn't want to see the hands.  Unless of course you're a hand model.  The shot is to show the casting director what you look like.  Although it may feel like it creates a good mood or pose, typically it is distracting.  There are exceptions and I would have to say this kids headshot is one of those exceptions.  It has so much personality that it works.  However, it would be best used as an additional shot in her portfolio, not as the main headshot.
kids_headshots_los angeles_acting_headshot photographers
Kids headshot showing great personality.

Give it straight to the camera:
When posing for a headshot, it's best not to turn away or to the side.  I often see actors turn their head and have to redirect them to give it to the camera.  You want your whole face to be seen and not a show your profile or be slightly turned away.  The eye contact is much stronger and again it creates a headshot that shows your whole face--exactly what you look like.  If you are posing for modeling shots you do not have to be straight into the camera, but you definitely want to have good posture.

If you are going to need some modeling shots:
Modeling shots will show at least half of the body, but often a 3/4 length shot or full body shot will be used for a modeling portfolio.  In this case bending the arms, crossing the legs, placing a hand behind you or creating some movement will enhance your pose.  This post is about headshots, but in a future post I will show some modeling poses for kids and teens.

Using posture to create a look:
Practice using your body in different ways to convey a mood or look.  Putting your hands on your hips conveys a totally different look then crossing your arms.  This may or may not show in the photo but it often helps you get the mood of the look you are going for.  Confident, sassy, Daddy's rich girl, sporty, athletic, energetic, mischievous, jock, bad boy, Disney brat, sweet and innocent etc.  These are all types that can be portrayed in a commercial headshot and a person's body posture can project the look.

A good headshot photographer will help you pose and give you tips, but anything you can do to be prepared for your headshot session will only result in better shots.

MODELING AND KIDS ON THE CATWALK

You've probably heard the term "Catwalk" in the modeling industry or on America's Next Top Model, but how many of you know what it means.  Many people think it has to do with the style of the models walk, but here's what Wikepedia says "In fashion, a catwalk is a narrow, usually flat platform that runs into an auditorium, used by models to demonstrate clothing and accessories during a fashion show.  In fashion jargon, "what's on the catwalk" or similar phrasing can refer to whatever is new and popular in fashion.  Read the full article here Wikipedia Catwalk.

It's not often that you see kids modeling on the Catwalk, but here's a wonderful video I came across with beautiful child models strutting their stuff.  Love this European style these kids are modeling from the children's clothing brand Mayoral.

By the way, Answer Bag say's this about the Catwalk: "It's a term that was already used for a narrow walkway that connects buildings, kind of like a footbridge, allowing workmen to get to one tall building to the next, kind of walking or roaming the neighborhood like a tom cat does. Catwalks are also what they call those narrow walkways up high in theaters or concert halls, just like cats like to walk up high on tops of walls or roofs."

Well, that explains it!

If you're teenage daughter or son is looking to start a modeling career one of the things they should do is look at fashion magazines such as Vogue.

agents and modeling los angeles
Vogue magazine with iconic model Twiggy.
Spend time looking at the modeling poses and how the model uses her eyes to communicate.  Although these are adult models, your teenage aspiring model will learn by observation, key ways to work the camera.  I find many young or inexperienced child models or teen models don't know what to do with their body or limbs during their first photoshoot.  By looking at successful models your kids can learn basic posing and inspiration for their first photoshoot.

Not all kids or teens that start modeling have a natural ability.  I've seen many young girls and guys learn and grow as they get more and more comfortable with the camera.   Half the battle is knowing what to do.    You don't need to go to an expensive modeling school to learn this.  In fact many of the modeling schools are overpriced scams that want you to pay thousands of dollars for classes and hundreds to thousands for headshots and modeling portfolios.  Modeling school is not a necessary step to get a modeling agent for your child.   It doesn't mean you can't learn something at these schools, it's just that you do not have to spend that kind of money to get started as a child or teen model.  Beware of those that ask you to pay thousands of dollars to get your child started as a model or signed up with an agency.  Really all that is needed is to get the photos done and then submit to the agencies.  A good photographer will help guide the talent through the photoshoot, usually giving posing tips if the model is inexperienced.   As with anything the more experience, the better you get.  The same holds true with modeling.

KIDS ACTING HEADSHOTS.  MAKE UP OR NO MAKE UP?

The general rule for acting headshots whether a kid, teen or adult is that it must look like you.  Heavy make up on kids may be the norm for pageants but casting agents don't want to see this with a child's acting headshot.  A little bit of chapstick and moisturizer if needed is perfect for very young children.

With older children ages 9-12 I often recommend Burt's Bee's Natural Lip Shimmers or Cherry Chapstick and a light dusting of natural mineral powder. (I also love the one from  MAC cosmetics). If the eyes need brightning or the lashes are on the light side a little bit of clear mascara does the trick.  Other then that make up isn't recommended for kids headshots under age 13.

Kids Headshot with very little make-up.  A tiny bit of mascara on top lashes and very light pink lips.  Her skin is naturally beautiful and make up would have aged her.
A little bit of clear mascara brought out her natural look without being over made up or aging her into a teen for this young actors headshot.  Photo location Los Angeles.

Once a child hits thirteen make up is recommended for acting headshots, however it should be kept fresh and natural.  With teen headshots I like to start out with a girl next door look using light foundation, a little bit of blush and mascara.  After shooting this look, we can add some eyeliner to pop the eyes a bit more.  Then towards the end of the shoot we can go a little heavier with the eyeliner, pulling out a little edge.   Depending on the actress, we might go very edgy or some teen actors may even do a goth look, if that is a role they would like to portray.  These are additional looks that their talent agent might want for their commercial headshot portfolio.
With a teenage boys acting headshot you typically don't need make up unless a very uneven skin tone or to cover up blemishes.  Always keep kids and teen headshots very natural.

Regarding teen boys headshots, a little bit of foundation or cover up may be needed if there are blemishes or pimples.  Also, some foundation or concealer can be helpful for under the eyes or to even the skin tones.  Typically I like to evaluate this on an individual basis.  Many young actors have great skin and there is no need for make up during their headshot session.

HEADSHOTS AND THOSE COVETED ROLES

As I've mentioned before a headshot is not just a picture.  Headshots in Hollywood are taken very seriously.  Why?  Because a child actors headshot can open doors to those coveted roles and castings.

kids headshot children
Kids Acting Headshots
Like it or not, this is a business and this is something you should understand when your child begins acting.  In any business you have to promote, advertise and or get the word out there that you have the best product or are a candidate for the job.
headshots
Kids acting headshot for TV & Film casting.
An actors headshot is used in advertising their unique look--it's a promotional tool.  The child's headshot shows casting what they look like and whether they are fit for the role, appearance wise.

For commercial castings often a casting director needs a very specific look.  They may want a teenager who looks "bookish or somewhat nerdy".  In this case they will pull actors who have that appearance or can pull off that look.  Recently I was interviewed for an article on kids headshots for Backstage Magazine and I gave some tips on headshots and specific looks.  BACKSTAGE MAGAZINE, ADVICE FOR ACTORS.  Here's a great example of the bookish look or somewhat nerdy type.
