recent kids headshot photo and modeling session

Acting headshot for modeling portfolio.
Some recent acting headshots that I did with a young model and actor.  Since he does both acting and modeling we included some full body shots which he can also use for his modeling portfolio.  The photos shown here are a some of the shots the agent chose.  Love the variety she picked from his headshot photo session.

The above headshot can be used for both a modeling portfolio and also is a great "theatrical" shot for tv and film roles.  The headshot shown below is primarily for commercials and tv roles--character acting headshots.

Does my child have a good look for acting?

I often get asked about whether or not a child would be good for acting, because sometimes the parents are concerned about the child's teeth, braces, weight, ears or one of their features.  To be perfectly honest I understand this, as Hollywood has a reputation of working with beautiful people.

However, if you look at TV shows, feature films and commercials, you will see all types.  Small actors, big actors, short actors, tall actors, beautiful actors, quirky actors.   Actors and actresses with big ears, big nose, freckles, glasses, etc. Some of our most celebrated actors and actresses are not the "beautiful" ones.

Fortunately, in today's market real, unique, and quirky is in.  Take a look at the young kids from the very popular show "Stranger Things".  They are so likeable and real.  Are they known for their beauty?  No, they are popular because they are excellent actors and they are very likable and real.  Quirky is in and even though the child may be more on the pretty side, some talent agents are even asking the photographer to ensure to capture the quirky kids headshot.
Agents are asking for the "geek chic" look or "quirky" kids headshots.  Kids headshot taken by Robin Lorraine Photography.
Yes, there are always going to be beautiful people in Hollywood, but that's because beauty sells.  Most of us will turn our heads to look at a beautiful or striking woman or a very handsome man because, we are naturally attracted to beauty.

But, we also like to see things that are real and relatable.  Things that communicate to us, because we are or have experienced this.  Network family shows like "The Middle", "Modern Family", "Blackish", "Speechless"  all have elements and actors that are more relatable to most of us.   And Netflix has a slew of shows that are filled with very real looking people who are of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, and types.  More like the real world.  It wasn't always like this, but fortunately Hollywood is being pressured more and more to stop discriminating against body types, physical appearance, ethnicity, disabilities etc.  And the public is happy about this, rightfully so.

So, does my child have a good look for acting?  I would answer this by saying "Does your child want to act?"  And that should be the question.

What to wear for a child model photo shoot, part 2.

In the last post, I went over some of the clothing that you shouldn't bring to a child modeling photo shoot.  In this post, I'll go over some of the "do's" of clothing choices.

1.  Do bring colors that work well with your child's skin tone, hair & eyes.
Some of the photos that we will shoot are close up showing the face.  Basically a headshot or a very close up shot that shows the eyes and any interesting features.  Having a color that brings out the eyes can really show them off.  And in general having colors that work well with skin tones and hair can also be very complimentary to the model.  See the second photo below for an example of this.  The child model has dark eyes, hair & skin which contrast so nicely against the blue jacket.

Bring some colors that bring out the eyes for your child's modeling photo shoot.

The blue against her skin tone & hair color is beautiful for this child modeling photo.

Colors that contrast with the hair, eyes and skin are always a good choice when getting your child's modeling photos taken.
2.  Do bring some simple accessories such as hats, beanies, headbands, scarfs, etc.
Okay, some agents do not want to see hats or hair pieces and some do.  Just know that there can be varying opinions on this in the industry.  The key is that it should not be the focus of the photo. The model is the focus, not the clothing.  I recommend you always check with your modeling agent to find out if they have specific do's and don'ts.   Basically you should bring options to the photo shoot and then the photographer will determine which clothing and accessories will be used for the models photos.  In the child model photo below, the hat really brings attention to her eyes.
Bring hats, beanies or assorted accessories to your child modeling photo session.
You can bring simple hair pieces or headbands to your child modeling photo session.

For boys you can accessorize with beanies, ties, hats and suspenders.
Bring hats, ties and like accessories to your child's modeling photo session.

3.  Bring some full body options and some close up options.  Some people like to wear something from different seasons.  Example a bathing suit or shorts & top, and then a winter look.  Or you can choose a JCrew type preppy look and then a more high fashion look.  The key is that The clothing will show how you are proportioned and how the clothes hang on you. (Remember no very baggy looks that hide your body).  Although we may only need to shoot 3/4 looks, it's a good idea to bring some shoes or boots that complete the look.

Don't forget to bring shoes for the full body look.
Hope you've found these simple tips helpful.  If you have questions, feel free to email or call and I am happy to help.

Child Headshot Photographers Irvine,

What to wear for a child model photoshoot??

One of the questions that I am often asked as a child model photographer is "What kind of clothing should I bring to a child model photoshoot?"  That's a great question and I thought I could start by sharing some of the dont's.

DON'T'S FOR A CHILD MODEL PHOTOSHOOT:
1.  Don't bring bold clothing with distracting patterns.
2.  Don't bring very baggy and oversized clothing.
3.  Don't bring clothes with company logos.

When choosing clothes for a child model photoshoot, ensure the clothing shows the body type and is not a wild or distracting bold print.  Also, the child model photo should clearly show the body type.
The reason for a modeling photoshoot is to create a portfolio of images and or a photocard (aka ZED Card, Comp Card).  The portfolio is then sent to casting directors when they post a job seeking child models.  The images in the portfolio need to show the child models face and body type.  They should also clearly show their skin tone, hair color, eye color and any possible interesting traits such as a tooth gap, freckles etc.
You can clearly see his skin tone, eye color and hair color in this child model photo.
When you are buying a pair of shoes online you want to know what you are getting.  You may look at 3-5 photos to determine the heal height, the small details and if they are the style or "look" you want.  In a modeling portfolio, busy patterns and bold clothing are distracting and then the photo is about the clothing and not the model.  The casting director wants to have a good idea of what he is getting.

If those same shoes were in a oversize bag, you wouldn't be able to see them well.  With a models portfolio, baggy clothing may hide the child's body type and the casting director may not know if they are a good choice for the shoot.

Also, your photographer doesn't want you to bring clothes with logos to the photoshoot.  Logos, like Nike, GAP, JCREW may be in direct conflict with the product that they are seeking models for.  Adida's will not want to see prospective models wearing a NIKE t-shirt or that famous swish on the side of the shoes.  Bear this in mind when putting the clothing together for your child's model photoshoot and choose clothes that do not have logos.
Choose clothes and shoes that do not have logos for a child model photoshoot.
In summary, remember that the product an agent is selling is the model, not the clothing they are wearing.  Your child modeling photos are key to getting cast or getting an audition, so be aware of these basic rules when you put the clothes together to bring to a child modeling photoshoot.

In my next post I will go over the "Do's" for a child modeling photoshoot and provide more examples.  In the meantime here is another  example from a child modeling photoshoot and I hope you can use these child model photographer tips.
A great close up photo from a modeling photoshoot will have no logos, no bold patterns or distracting prints and clearly shows the skin tone, hair and eye color.

recent teen headshot session.

Recently I've had a slew of teen actor headshot sessions.  Many are long time actors and some are just getting going in the business.  In fact,  I often get phone calls from parents stating, "My teenager is very interested in acting but I know nothing about the business."  "My teenager is doing theater or expressing an interest in modeling & acting for many years and is now pushing me to help them get an agent." Fortunately I know a lot about the business and my specialty is kids and teen headshots.  The first step to finding an agent is to get some great child headshots.

Teen acting headshot, personality or quirky.

Acting headshot of young teenager.
Your teens headshot is their calling card, whether you do an actors showcase in an acting class, submit to agents, get a referral to an agent or want to start building credits by doing student films.  The headshot is the first thing agents, casting directors and talent managers look at.  They need to see your look (all types are fine), and then flip it over to see the acting resume.

So if you are just getting your teenager started in the business of acting, don't skimp, rather invest the money into getting great headshots.  A great kids or teen headshot is vital in getting noticed.  For one, it shows that you are coming into this with a professional attitude.  But the main reason is this will be the first thing that everyone sees in the industry that represents them.  Professional headshot photographers know what is needed in the industry and will catch the look to attract the agent or casting directors eye.

Hope you enjoy these headshots of this beautiful teenager.  And call Robin Lorraine if you have any questions about teen headshots in LA.
